Alpacas and Llamas like other ruminants rely on microbes to digest both
concentrate feed and fibre such as grass or hay. These "bugs" can
be destroyed or damaged by sudden changes in the diet.
It is therefore necessary to change their diet over a period of at least
7 to 10 days.
This is easily accomplished by mixing a small amount of the new feed to the
existing diet. This is increased gradually over time until the required
amount is reached.
It is advisable to follow the above procedure when new Alpacas or Llamas
join your herd.
